From its origins at Boryspil International Airport to its international debut in the United States, the Sky Swallows Contest has evolved into a platform celebrating creativity, innovation and the people redefining modern aviation and lifestyle.

There is a particular kind of elegance associated with aviation. It is found in the precision of a perfectly executed service, the discipline behind a polished appearance, the confidence of a professional who represents a global brand, and the ability to make movement itself feel effortless.

It is precisely at this intersection of professionalism, aesthetics and innovation that the Sky Swallows Contest was born.

Established in 2016 by Boryspil Magazine, the magazine of Boryspil International Airport in Ukraine, Sky Swallows began as a national award recognizing outstanding achievements across aviation, travel, beauty and lifestyle. The connection with Boryspil International Airport became an important part of the project’s identity, strengthening its roots in the aviation industry. Over the years, the project developed into a distinctive platform bringing together airlines, creative professionals, fashion experts, beauty specialists and influential figures from the international creative industries.

In 2025, Sky Swallows entered a new chapter, expanding its presence to the United States and presenting the contest as an international project. This expansion also introduced a new hybrid format, combining online judging with an offline award ceremony in Dallas. While the project was originally conducted entirely offline in Ukraine, its international format allows experts and participants from different countries to take part without having to travel to the United States.

The 2025 awards were celebrated in Dallas, Texas, as part of Dallas Fashion Week, with the ceremony taking place at the Frontiers of Flight Museum — a particularly fitting setting for an initiative whose identity has always connected aviation with culture, style and human creativity.

The new format reflects the international nature of the project. Part of the jury can participate remotely, including experts based in Ukraine, while the physical award ceremony is reserved for winners and guests who are able to join in person in Dallas. The ceremony takes place at a partner venue of Dallas Fashion Week, creating a physical meeting point for a project that now operates across borders.

An important element of the international jury is the presence of a Ukrainian representative from the aviation industry. This is a deliberate connection to the project’s origins and a way of preserving its Ukrainian identity as Sky Swallows develops internationally. In 2025, the jury included Inna Radzivilova, Head of the Association of Civil Aviation Flight Attendants of Ukraine, who had also served on the jury of the very first Sky Swallows project in 2016.

The timing was significant. Founded in 2016, Sky Swallows approaches its tenth anniversary in 2026, marking nearly a decade of evolution from a Ukrainian project created by Boryspil Magazine and rooted in the aviation environment of Boryspil International Airport to an international platform.

Sky Swallows has never been limited to recognizing airlines or traditional aviation achievements.

Its philosophy is broader: aviation is an ecosystem in which fashion, beauty, communication, hospitality, personal presentation and creative identity all contribute to the passenger experience.

The contest evaluates nominees according to three central principles:

  • innovation and strategic thinking,
  • industry impact and leadership,
  • social responsibility and ethical standards.

Approximately 100 applications are received each year, while the winners are selected by an expert jury composed of professionals from aviation, fashion, media, beauty and the creative industries.

This multidisciplinary approach is one of the contest’s defining characteristics. Aviation today is not simply about transportation. International airlines operate as global lifestyle brands. Their uniforms communicate identity. Their cabin interiors communicate design philosophy. Their beauty standards communicate corporate culture. Their crews become ambassadors of the brand long before a passenger reaches a destination.

Sky Swallows recognizes this increasingly sophisticated relationship between aviation and lifestyle.

A legacy built at Boryspil

The first Sky Swallows ceremony was held in 2016 at Boryspil International Airport in Kyiv. Created by Boryspil Magazine, the project brought the editorial vision of the airport’s magazine directly into the aviation environment. The inaugural project brought together major names from international aviation, including Qatar Airways, Air Astana, Turkish Airlines, Air Malta, Air Arabia and Czech Airlines.

The first jury reflected the same combination of aviation and creative expertise. Among its members were:

Inna Radzivilova, Head of the Association of Civil Aviation Flight Attendants of Ukraine;

Olga Torner, Mrs. World 2016;

Anna Varava, Editor-in-Chief of L’OFFICIEL Ukraine;

Evgeny Dykhne, then General Director of Boryspil Airport;

Ernest Gromatsky, PhD in Law and founder of Gramatskiy & Partners.

The 2016 winners included Azur Air, Air Astana and Windrose Airlines.

In 2017, the contest continued its evolution at TSUM Kyiv, introducing an even stronger fashion component. Its theme, “Fashionable ideas for stylish flights,” invited Ukrainian fashion designers to envision new concepts for airline uniforms — transforming what might traditionally be considered a functional element into a statement of identity and design.

The following year, Sky Swallows moved further into visual storytelling. The 2018 theme, “Heavenly,” focused on everyday life photographed through the perspective of international airlines. Among the winners and nominees were Ukraine International Airlines, SkyUp Airlines, Air Astana, Air France, Singapore Airlines, Windrose and others.

Across these editions, a consistent idea emerged: the aviation industry can be a canvas for creativity.

The 2025 international chapter

The 2025 edition brought that philosophy to the United States. The contest’s new international chapter was presented in Dallas, a city with a strong connection to aviation, fashion and business. The award ceremony took place on October 7 and 9 during Dallas Fashion Week at the Frontiers of Flight Museum on Lemmon Avenue.

Unlike the original Ukrainian format, which was entirely offline, the international Sky Swallows Contest now combines online and offline participation. The judging process can take place remotely, allowing members of the international jury to participate from different countries. At the same time, the project retains a physical presence in Dallas, where the award ceremony brings together those winners and participants who are able to attend in person.

The 2025 jury brought together an intentionally international group of experts:

Nataliya Nova, CEO of Dallas Fashion Week;

Lex Melony, founder of OFN Film Festival in London;

Inna Radzivilova, Head of the Association of Civil Aviation Flight Attendants of Ukraine;

Flavio Iryoda, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Avessa Magazine in Miami.

The composition of the jury reflects the hybrid and international nature of the project: experts from different countries can contribute to the selection process online, while the Ukrainian aviation representative remains an essential part of the jury, maintaining a direct connection to the contest’s original identity.

For Nataliya Nova, who joined the Sky Swallows jury in 2025, the connection between aviation and fashion goes far beyond aesthetics:

“It is a privilege to serve as a judge for the Sky Swallows Contest—an initiative that beautifully explores the intersection of aviation, fashion, and contemporary lifestyle.

There is an undeniable elegance to the world of aviation. It represents movement, discovery, sophistication, and the freedom to experience the world beyond borders. Sky Swallows captures that spirit through a celebration of creativity, personal style, visual storytelling, and the individuals who shape the culture of travel.

At Dallas Fashion Week, we have hosted multiple events at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, our official venue, where fashion and aviation meet in a truly distinctive setting. These experiences have shown us how naturally the two worlds complement one another—both driven by vision, precision, imagination, and a desire to move forward.

I am delighted to join Sky Swallows in recognizing the individuals whose creativity and leadership embody this spirit and remind us that travel is not simply about where we go, but about how we see and experience the world along the way.”

— Nataliya Nova, CEO, Dallas Fashion Week

Among the 2025 awardees was Viktoriia Shevchuk, recognized in the category Oriental Skyline Look.

Her award illustrates perhaps better than any other the way Sky Swallows has expanded the traditional understanding of aviation aesthetics.

Shevchuk’s winning work explores the relationship between Eastern elegance and the highly disciplined beauty standards associated with international aviation.

At first glance, makeup may appear to be a small detail within the sophisticated machinery of an airline. In reality, it is part of a much larger visual language.

For cabin crew, appearance is not simply personal expression. It is part of the corporate identity of an airline, a carefully considered combination of professionalism, consistency, elegance and recognizability.

Shevchuk approached this idea through precision. Her signature eyeliner technique was recognized for its symmetry, definition and durability, maintaining a polished appearance during extended flights. Rather than treating makeup as decoration, she approached it as an element of professional visual identity.

Her work also combines premium beauty products with her own creative developments, including the creation of the VS Beauty eyelash line.

This combination of technical mastery and entrepreneurship is central to what made her recognition significant. Shevchuk is not simply working within established beauty standards; she is interpreting them and developing her own language around them.

Her Oriental Skyline Look brings together Eastern-inspired elegance and contemporary aviation aesthetics, creating an image that feels both culturally distinctive and internationally relevant.

It is a fitting concept for an award whose own journey has crossed borders.

When luxury becomes a matter of detail

Modern luxury increasingly exists in details. It can be the cut of a uniform, the architecture of an airport lounge, the presentation of a beauty look, the craftsmanship of an accessory or the experience created by a flight crew.

The most sophisticated brands understand that these details are not secondary. They are the brand. This is where Sky Swallows occupies an interesting position. Rather than separating aviation from fashion, beauty and lifestyle, the contest places them within the same conversation.

Its evolution from a Ukrainian aviation award into an international project reflects the globalization of that conversation.

The hybrid format makes that international reach more tangible. Participation is no longer dependent on being physically present in the United States: the online judging process opens the project to experts and participants across borders, while the Dallas ceremony provides an exclusive offline setting for those able to attend. The result is a project that maintains a physical connection to the world of aviation and fashion while operating through a genuinely international network.

The 2025 edition in Dallas demonstrated that the concept can travel beyond its original environment while retaining its core identity: recognizing professionals who combine expertise with creativity and who understand that excellence is communicated not only through what they do, but also through how they present it.

Looking toward 2026

With its tenth anniversary approaching in 2026, Sky Swallows enters an important new stage.

Its history already tells a story of transformation — from a project created by Boryspil Magazine and launched at Boryspil International Airport, to Kyiv’s fashion and cultural spaces, and finally to the United States. Along the way, its focus has expanded from airline uniforms and aviation professionals to a wider exploration of beauty, fashion, travel, lifestyle and creative influence.

Its international future is built around the same principle: connecting people across borders while preserving the Ukrainian aviation roots from which the project emerged. The online component allows the contest to remain accessible to an international community, while the offline ceremony in Dallas gives the project a physical presence and a distinctive setting for celebrating its winners.

The symbolism behind the name remains particularly appropriate. Swallows are associated with freedom, hope, rebirth and the instinct to return home. They travel great distances, yet remain connected to a sense of place and belonging.

For a project born in Ukraine and now developing an international presence, the metaphor carries additional meaning. Sky Swallows is ultimately about movement: between countries, industries and ideas. It celebrates those who understand that aviation is not only about reaching another destination. It is also about the experience created along the way. And in an industry where every detail speaks, beauty, precision and creativity can become a language of their own.
